The Amico family has been building and repairing ships and boats for more than two centuries with the business passing from father to son. Since the early nineteenth century to the present day, the family members have always approached this commitment passionately and professionally. The history of the Amico family shipyards dates back to 1799 when master builder Matteo Amico set up his yard in Loano, on the western side of Liguria, about 60 km from Genoa.

This yard operated up until the end of the nineteenth century, when the introduction of steel and steam engines marked a revolution in ship building. In 1885, during this period of great change, Michele Amico, a descendent of Matteo who had previously transferred to Genoa, launched the business of ship maintenance and servicing to both sailing and steam vessels.

Michele Amico was followed by his son Luigi into the business and this is the basis of the company that is still thriving today.

At the beginning of the 1950’s Guido Amico, the son of Luigi, followed the family tradition and started working for the ‘Luigi Amico Company’. He introduced many innovations including high pressure sandblasting and the first motorised support platforms used in Italy.
In the early 1980’s Guido Amico had taken over and an application was made to the port authorities to construct a new shipyard. He was subsequently granted an area in the east of the harbour, where in 1991, working with his son Alberto, he founded Amico & Co, a new shipyard dedicated exclusively to the repair and refit of large yachts.
The challenge here was to retain the craftsmanship and skills of the old shipyard and match these to a highly organised and skilled facility with the latest equipment and machinery to meet the high standards required for super yacht refit and repair. Today Amico & Co is a well established and well renowned world leader in the field of super yacht repair and refit, with ninety percent of its clientele internationally based.

Even now, more than two centuries after the founding of the first Amico shipyard, the tradition and skills found in this part of Liguria continue to pass from father to son. Amico & Co has pursued an uninterrupted commitment to the highest industry standards and to continual innovation, utilising the expertise and passion of people who have always looked towards the sea and the future.
